As we learned from a recent post about ethnic identity, the best way to learn what words to use to distinguish one or more people by their physical characteristics is to ask them. Unfortunately, this approach is not as easy as it seems. Those who wish to describe ethnic identity or gender identity often have a category, rather than one person, in mind, and any two people with similar characteristics (for example, a pair of American Indians, or two lesbians) are likely to have divergent preferences. Likewise, any effort to obtain sanction for one term or another from an organization claiming to represent people with nonheterosexual gender identities (or people with a certain ethnic identity) will not result in universal acceptance of the term by those it is meant to refer to. Why do we even need distinctive terms to discuss intersecting identities with nebulous boundaries? The answer to this question is another question: How can we hope to communicate about sexuality and gender without a common vocabulary? There is such a vocabulary, but, like humanity, it is necessarily fluid. But here are terms and definitions that many people agree on: 1. Bisexual: A term for a person sexually attracted to people of both the same sex and the opposite sex. 2. Dyke: A term for a woman sexually attracted to other women; some people consider it offensive, although many lesbians have reclaimed the word and self-identify as dykes. 3. Fag: A term for a man sexually attracted to other men; some people may consider it offensive, although many gays have reclaimed the word and self-identify as fags. 4. GLBT: An inclusive initialism for those self-identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transsexual. A more inclusive and as yet uncommon variant is GLBTQ2IA; the additional elements refer to ââ¬Å"queer, questioning, intersex allies.â⬠5. Gay: An inclusive term for those attracted to people of the same sex or not exclusively attracted to people of the opposite sex, although it is often used in the phrase ââ¬Å"gays and lesbians,â⬠which places men and women in separate categories, and can thus refer either to both genders or men only. 6. Genderqueer: A term for those who refuse to be confined to a single gender role. 7. Lesbian: A term for a woman sexually attracted to other women. 8. Queer: An inclusive term for those attracted to people of the same sex or not exclusively attracted to people of the opposite sex; some people may consider it offensive, although many who that fall under that definition have reclaimed the word and self-identify as queers. 9. Same-gender loving: A self-evident term used by those dissatisfied by traditional terminology. 10. Transgender: A term for a person who presents as having a gender other than their original one. This usage is not to be confused with transsexual, which refers to someone in or beyond the process of gender reassignment involving physiological changes, or transvestite, a word for someone who whether occasionally or frequently, whether publicly or privately, and for any one of various reasons wears clothing associated with the opposite gender. (Transgender inclusively encompasses these and other terms.) In general usage, it is usually safe to refer to ââ¬Å"gays and lesbiansâ⬠to refer to the entirety of people whose sexuality is not strictly heterosexual. GLBT is a more inclusive term, though it is often used fallaciously in the phrase ââ¬Å"the GLBT community,â⬠as if such a cohesive entity exists. The connotation of this phrase seems to be that there is such a community, but only in the sense of people united in solidarity for civil rights for anyone falling under the GLBT umbrella. However, the phrase would seem to exclude heterosexual people sympathetic to the civil rights concerns of GLBT people. You can tell a lot about a book and its author by reading the ISBN number.The 13 digit ISBN number helps:Identify the specific titleIdentify the authorIdentify the type of book they are buyingIdentify the physical properties of that particular bookIdentify the geographical location of the publisherLetââ¬â¢s break it down and look at what all these numbers mean.Here is the ISBN for a particular book:978-3-16-148410-0Youââ¬â¢ll notice this sequence is divided into 5 number combinations. But the first three dig its ââ¬Å"978â⬠indicates that this string of numbers is for an ISBN. If we remove these digits we have:3-16-148410-0First is the initial digit, in this case: 3The 3 is the language group identifier which here indicates German. For English speaking countries a 0 or 1 is used. Numbers for language identification generally range from 1-5.Here is a list of the most common Group identifiers:0 or 1 for English2 for French3 for German4 for Japan5 for Russian7 for Peoples Republic of ChinaItââ¬â¢s worth mentioning that the rarer the language, the longer the number identifier will be. For example, Indonesia is 602 whereas Turkey is 9944. You can reference the complete list at the International ISBN Agency.Next is ââ¬Å"16â⬠. This is the ââ¬Å"publisher code,â⬠and it identifies the publisher on any book that has this number. This number can be as long as 9 digits.ââ¬Å"148410â⬠- This six-digit series represents the title of the book. The publisher assigns this t o a specific book or edition of the book, such as a hardcover version or paperback. This could be a single digit or stretch to multiple digits.ââ¬Å"0â⬠is the last digit and is known as the ââ¬Å"check digitâ⬠. This number is mathematically calculated as a fixed digit. This is always a single digit.This number indicates that the rest of the ISBN numbers have been scanned and is calculated based on the other digits in the code.Where is the ISBN number on books?The ISBN is usually found above the barcode on the back of the book.However, theyre not the same.The barcode is much different than the ISBN number.This is an important distinction because:When you purchase an ISBN you donââ¬â¢t automatically get a barcodeThe barcode of your book can change, while your ISBN can remain the same.Weââ¬â¢ve already discussed what data the ISBN carries, however,the barcode includes extra information such as the bookââ¬â¢s fixed price and the currency itââ¬â¢s being sold in.B arcodes are a necessary element of your book as they allow for most retailers and distributors to scan your ISBN for retail and inventory reasons.The standard barcode is known as the EAN (European Article Number) barcode, and your barcode must be in this format to sell your book in bookstores.(Breakdown of the typical EAN barcode on the back of a book by Publisher Services)Do ISBNs expire?No, ISBN numbers never expire or go bad. In fact, if you have one from a long time ago, you can simply reconstruct it for use.But what if my old ISBN is really old and only has 10 digits?Thats not a problem, either. With this handy tool from Bowker, you can convert the ISBN easily and immediately.The Book Designer also has a great resource for learning how to reconstruct an ISBN if you finally decided to write and self-publish the book youve been thinking about since you bought the ISBN.ISBN Search: How to Find Your Books ISBNIf you want to look up the ISBN of any book out there, you can do so easi ly by visiting the website ISBNSearch.org.Youll be greeted with a screen like the one above where you will be prompted to type in the ISBN, author name, or book title.After hitting search, you will have a list of books matching your searched items with the both the 13-digit ISBN and the 10-digit, like in the example below.How to Read a BarcodeIf you look at the picture of a standard barcode, youââ¬â¢ll notice two barcodes side by side. The barcode that appears on the left is the EAN generated from the ISBN number.The other number appearing on the right is a 5-digit add-on, called an EAN-5, that contains the price of the book. The first digit is a 5 and is a must for scanners to read. ASIN numbers are used by Amazon to manage and identify the products they are selling on their site. Itââ¬â¢s a 10-character alphanumeric unique identifier thatââ¬â¢s assigned by Amazon.com and its partners.You can find this on your book page. In your browser, the Amazon ASIN will be after the productââ¬â¢s name and ââ¬Å"dpâ⬠. The next place to find this is in your book or product details area of your book page.However, an ASIN is not the same as an ISBN. You can only use it with Amazon. If you want to sell through other platforms or in brick and mortar stores, youââ¬â¢r e going to need an ISBN.Reasons Self-Published Authors Need an ISBNIf you want to publish and sell your eBook on Amazon, then the quick answer is no, it isnââ¬â¢t necessary. Amazon will assign your eBook an ASIN number which will be used to identify and track your title.However, thatââ¬â¢s only with Amazon, and only with eBooks.If you want your readers to get a hold of a print version of your book, then youââ¬â¢re going to need an ISBN.This might be important if you have a brick and mortar marketing strategy, or if you want your book to be accessible through libraries (more on this later), or if youââ¬â¢re looking to deal with wholesalers or other online retailers.Hereââ¬â¢s a simple rule of thumb: if you want to sell your book by means other than as an ebook on Amazon, then youââ¬â¢ll need an ISBN.How do I buy an ISBN Number?You might not even have to buy your ISBN number because of services offered toself-published authors. But it leads to you having several ISBNs, all from different publishers, for the same book.Can you picture how unprofessional that looks to a bookstore?Wouldnââ¬â¢t it have been easier to start off by buying your own ISBN? Wouldnââ¬â¢t that make you look more professional?On top of this, each of those free ISBNs identifies the self-publishing company as a publisher. It is for the people to act justly. A number of Prohibition experiments conducted by the Government to control the consumption of alcohol failed miserably. People never gave up and found new ways of acquiring alcohol inspite of many restrictions from the govt. It is the people who have to understand the ill-effects of alcohol on the society and act accordingly. We have also witnessed a number of cases where people suffering with AIDS are ostracized by the community. Legal system can only help support these people physically/financially but not morally. It is the people who have to understand and act accordingly. One important problem faced by most of the countries is that of Pollution. There are many laws enacted by the Govt. to control pollution. No doubt that these laws are helpful in controlling pollution till a extent but the real control and effect of these laws is put to question. There are factories who would prefer to do away with the rules and regulation by paying up fine/penalty for not adhering to the norms instead of regulating their methods of production because they find it more convenient financially doing so. Air pollution can also be controlled by growing sense of awareness within the people using automobiles say the usage of multi-modal transport whenver possible instead of their personal cars and/or maintaining a sound condition of the engine of the vehicle. Instead law cannot make it mandatory for people to travel only by multi-modal transport system.

Marshal McLuhan ââ¬â Charlatan or Visionary? Marshal McLuhan has been described as both a ââ¬Å"media prophetâ⬠and a ââ¬Å"pop professorâ⬠(Wilcox). Although his book The Medium is the Massage was rejected by some academics (Wilcox), it became a popular success outside the academic world. His ability to coin such phrases as the ââ¬Å"global villageâ⬠and his ideas on how media influences culture allowed McLuhan to become an icon of the counterculture movement of the 1960ââ¬â¢s. Some scholars argue that McLuhanââ¬â¢s voice was even ââ¬Å"swallowed up in the popular cultural movementâ⬠(Surette). The word macluhanisme has been adopted into the French language as ââ¬Å"a synonym for the world of pop cultureâ⬠(Playboy). But was McLuhan truly a pioneering scholar? It surely depends on how one defines ââ¬Å"pioneering scholarâ⬠. I believe that many of McLuhanââ¬â¢s ideas, even if they have become their own clichà ©s and are not wholly understood, are valuable contributions to our academ ic and cultural heritage by the fact that they are still discussed today. McLuhanââ¬â¢s writings have opened up a forum for much discussion and academic study, and have laid the foundation for an area of study on communication mediums. In an interview with Playboy magazine, McLuhan argues that ââ¬Å"man must, as a simple survival strategy, become aware of what is happening to him, despite the attendant pain of such comprehensionâ⬠(Playboy). McLuhan states that his work has the ââ¬Å"purpose of trying to understand our technological environment and its psychic and social consequencesâ⬠(Playboy). Many of McLuhanââ¬â¢s ideas concerning media can be classified as technologically deterministic. He argued that several technologies, alphabetic writing and movable type, were responsible for the ââ¬Å"detribilizationâ⬠of society. By ââ¬Å"detribilizationâ⬠he was referring to the creation of the individual who is responsible for his/her own ideas. He then argued that in recent times, a ââ¬Å"retribilizationâ⬠was occurring because of the introduction of electricity-based communications technologies such as radio and television. As Playboy writes, this is the ââ¬Å"electronics revolution that will ultimately retribalize man by restoring his sensory balanceâ⬠. As critic Tom Wolfe asked: "Suppose [McLuhan] is what he sounds like: the most important thinker since Newton, Darwin, Freud, Einstein, and Pavlov - what if he is right?

Due to the strict requirements of the Trade Union Act 1959, Malaysia union are normally small fragmented and regional. But, they still protest the decision of recruiting more foreign workers from India which might harm our local workers benefit.Some local workers are too picky on job selection and they donââ¬â¢t want to work unless there is high salary, benefit or bonus waiting for them. So, attitude towards the job is their main problem. So, the employers forced to retrenched the local workers and recruiting the foreign workers by outsourcing or others way. The objectives of this assignment are to figure out the problems facing by Trade Unions in Malay sia on migrant and domestic workers. Furthermore, we also know that the impacts of the foreign workers policy in manufacturing industry.In this assignment, we have a more understanding on foreign workers policy as well as the ways to overcome it in future trend. Literature Review According to A. Navamukundan (n. d. ), employers are cost-conscious and choose workers who are not only inexpensive but also have the necessary skills and comply with strict discipline and hard work. The preference will be for immigrant foreign workers, who will accept both lower wages and worse terms and conditions of employment, as their primary objective is to earn as much money as possible within a short span of time.Those are the reason why the population of immigrant foreign workers are increasing years by years. A study done by Philip S. Robertson Jr (n. d) stated that the Malaysian Government does not have a comprehensive legal and policy framework to regulate the recruitment, admission, placement, treatment, and repatriation of migrant workers. Oversight of migrant workers is divided among ministries, and even within ministries, between various departments. Therefore, foreign worker can easily migrate to our country to find a job which offers them the salary that is higher than their own countries.This has become a threat to the local workers. Nagiah Ramasamy (n. d) proposed that the challenge for union leaders is to build a union movement that can respond effectively to the threats and opportunities that it faces with the growing influence of MNCs and the growing numbers of bilateral trade agreements. Trade unions can help in improving occupational health and safety, decent work and social dialogue with government and employers. It is so obvious that trade union play an important role in fighting for local workerââ¬â¢s right. A study presented by U. S.Department of Labor stated the Government of Malaysia revised its policy on foreign workers so that priority would be give n to Malaysians seeking employment due to the world economic slowdown and increased unemployment in 2001. The Government has limited documented workers to a three year stay and is cracking down on unregistered foreign workers, with new amendments to the Immigration Act calling for harsh penalties. According to Kgaogelo Elizabeth Mokoka (2007), most South African nurses immigrate to destinations such as UK, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Australia and the USA (Xaba & Phillips 2001).In a study commissioned by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Buchan et al (2003) identified two groups of countries in terms of nurse emigration and mobility. ââ¬Å"Destination countriesâ⬠are those to which nurse are drawn, while ââ¬Å"source countriesâ⬠are those that nurse are drawn from. Destination countries include five countries, namely Australia, Ireland, Norway, the UK and the USA. According to Mr. Ajit Singh Jessy from the Penang Human Resources committee, salary remains as one of, or the most, important factor in the retention of workers.As such, the complaints of local workers regarding wage levels are not baseless, especially when it comes to menial forms of labour. What may be baseless is the argument that locals shun these jobs which then have to be farmed out to foreign labourers. According to Cecilia Kok (2011), for South and Southeast Asian economies, especially those that are lagging behind Malaysia, many migrant workers perceive a land flowing with milk and honey. Official data show that Malaysia attracts a huge number of migrant workers into the country.According to official record, the number quadrupled from less than 500,000 in 1999 to more than two million, representing about 17% of the country's workforce in 2008. Vijayakumari Kanapathy (2006) proposed that foreign workers in large numbers were seen as a security threat as the rising crime rate and incidence of highly contagious diseases were associated with them. Such popular perception was co mpounded by the belief among policy makers that heavy reliance on low-skilled foreign labour will trap the economy in low-wage low-skill equilibrium and slow down the much-warranted economic transformation into high-skilled activities.According to the International Organization for Migration (n. d. ), there are approximately 2,109,954 migrant workers currently working in Malaysia, 50 per cent are Indonesian labour migrants, indicating the scale of Indonesian labour migration to Malaysia. The majority of labour migrants arriving in Malaysia originate from other South and Southeast Asian countries, mainly attracted by the higher salaries that are covered in Malaysia compared with their countries of origin.A study done by FEDERATION OF MALAYSIAN MANUFACTURERS (2010) stated that Manufacturing companies are currently reporting an increase in orders. However, many are facing difficulties accepting and fulfilling orders due to a shortage of workers. Some have to turn away orders while othe rs are penalised for late delivery. There are also companies recording losses because they have not been able to fulfill orders. Development of the Issues Important of Manufacturing Industry and Contribution to GDP The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Malaysia is depends on its agricultural ector, manufacturing industries and the service sectors. Purchasing power parity (PPP) is a theory which states that exchange rates between currencies are in equilibrium when their purchasing power is the same in each of the two countries. This means that the exchange rate between two countries should equal the ratio of the two countries' price level of a fixed basket of goods and services. In 2008, the agricultural sector had contributed 9. 7 % towards the countryââ¬â¢s GDP. The contributions of the manufacturing industries were estimated as 44. % and that of service sector was 45. 7 % towards the countryââ¬â¢s GDP. As per the GDP- PPP, Malaysia is ranked 29th in the world. A GDP growth rat e of 20 % was noticed towards the end of 20th century. The Gross Domestic Product nominal of Malaysia in 2009 was estimated as US$ 207,400 billion in 2009 and that of GDP-PPP was estimated as $ 3. 9 billion. The GDP nominal per capita in 2009 was estimated at US $8,100. According to economic report 2004/2005, these include the Foreign Worker Rationalisation Programme to legalise illegal workers, amendments to the Immigration Act, 1977 and imposition of an annual levy.In addition, several Memorandum of Understanding (MOUs) were signed with labour exporting countries to authorise legal recruitment of foreign workers. All of these had resulted the employerââ¬â¢s preference more towards foreign workers but not the locals and this preference has come along with t hree obvious activities according to a study done by the Ministry of Human Resources Malaysia. The first is the number of the application on recruiting foreign workers is significantly increasing as we can know from a statistic that there are average 20,000 foreign workers approved every month in Malaysia.Secondly, most of the employers are not taking serious altitude in recruiting locals. Those applications from the employer mostly from manufacturing industry are bypassed while going through the ELX system to ensure the objective of recruiting foreign workers can be achieved. Lastly, large portion of foreign workers in Malaysia are employed through the outsourcing companies to escape the quota limit. If the employer directly hires foreign workers from source countries, they will be facing the quota limitation and therefore they hire the foreign workers through a third arty. Advantages According to Daniel Lee and Richard Ho (2011 Nov), many employers complain that their business act ivities will come to a dead stop if they forbid them to use foreign workers because the jobs in those sectors are perceived to be dirty, difficult and demeaning to the average Malaysian. Therefore, they have to utilize foreign workers and sing praises of hiring such workers, supposedly of a labor category that is easy to utilize, simple to manage and that does not make demands for wages increases.Some local employers have voiced out in support for the hiring of foreign workers that many among them have threatened to blot out and relocate if their demands for ââ¬Å"low-costâ⬠foreign workers are unmet. As such, foreign workers fill up the empty space as they are not opposed to working in dirtier, more dicey conditions and longer hours for equal or lesser pay thereby keeping labor costs relatively low and helping to keep Malaysia competitive against other low-cost producing countries. According to K George, the government has finally decided to extend equal treatment to foreign workers and also Human Resources Minister Dr.Fong Chan Onn announced that foreign workers employed in Malaysia would be treated equally in accordance with the provisions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) convention which Its function is to safeguard the rights and dignity of the working people all over the world. Recommendation Foreign worker indeed have contributed to the growth of economy, but too dependent on this gro up of foreign workers to drive our economy cannot be carry out in long term as this may drag our country economy.To stop dependence of foreign worker in our country cannot be done away overnight as a sudden repatriation of them can have a serious impact on the economy. Therefore a careful planning and cooperation from employer and government is needed. One of the ways to ensure employers lower down the foreign worker and shift to employ locals are by quotas system. Quotas of foreign employee can hired in one company should be set by the government to stop them over relying to foreign worker and hire more local.Different quotas should be set differently according to the supply and demand because the supply for local labour in certain industry is low for example construction. Quotas should be raise for a certain period of time to minimize the impact to the industries. Government can reduce the amount of foreign worker by increasing levy on foreign worker to a high amount where there a re no cost saving benefits in employing foreign worker to encourage the employer uses local worker. When the cost of hiring a foreign worker is higher compare to local worker, employer will choose to use local worker because they can save cost thus ill eventually increase the amount of skilled local worker in Malaysia which will increase the productivity and move Malaysia into a high income country. Both employer and government play a big role in order to reduce the country dependence on foreign worker. Employer who over depend on cheap foreign worker should try to shift use local to increase the productivity in long term while government should implement better regulation and enforce them to punish those employer which break the rules for using illegal immigrant in their firm and to prevent illegal immigrant to enter our country.Conclusion In conclusion, we had more understanding about foreign workers policy in Malaysia. Nevertheless, the foreign workers play an important role as o ne of the workforce in our country since decade years. They bring their skills from their country and practice them at here. But, it also brings some problem and cases to us which even make our government headache. So, law enforcement should be taken serious, as we should treat the arrest and detention of undocumented migrant workers as an administrative offence, and not a criminal matter.These undocumented workers will affect our daily life, as they would commit crime or practice illegal activities in our country which make our government hard to tackle on them since we donââ¬â¢t have their personal detail and document. So, enforcement on foreign works policy is vital. Besides that, instead we relying on foreign workforce, we know that it would be better for us to consider more on our domestic workers which can also have equivalent level of skills and performances.This also follows to our MTUC aim which suggested that giving priority to our local workers. Of course, our domestic workers also need to improve themselves, not matter on hard-skills or soft-skills; we should upgrade our own knowledge and skills to fight in economy and global competition. It should be making clear that the interactions between governments are extremely important. The trade union leader should try to come out an agreement with the government on foreign workers policy which will benefit foreign workers and our Malaysian at the same time.If does, it will be the win-win situation between two country. OVERCOMING FOREIGN LANGUAGE ANXIETY By Saranda Nuredini Instructor: Luiza Zeqiri Course: ESP Communication I January 2012 ââ¬Å"Sweaty palms, shaking hands, dry mouth and muscle tension mean for many of us, that we are about to speak in public. Couple this fear of speaking in public with performing or speaking in another language and the success of the speaker may be dramatically compromisedâ⬠(Leigh, 2009). By having to speak in a foreign language, the amount of fear in us grows and transforms into the feeling of anxiety, which is scientifically named as a Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA).The fear of dealing in a foreign language environment is most felt when a student must perform orally in some way but it can also occur when listening, reading or writing (Brantmeier, 2005). FLA has been the subject of many scholarly surveys and papers as overcoming it can lead to better and faster language acquisition as well as a much more pleasurable learning experience (Guess, 2007). Betwee n one third and one half of second language learners suffer from FLA (Von Worde, 2003; Randall 2007) and it is important to be aware that many of these students have not come up with a way to deal with their anxiety (Hauck & Hurd, 1991).This research paper aims to outline the causes and effects of FLA as well as the ways that help overcoming it. Despite the fact that Foreign Language Anxiety has been proven to be the main concern to the modern teaching environment, a progress has been noticed at the development of the overcoming strategies. The overcoming foreign language anxiety process includes strategies that can be implemented by the teacher, a tutor and the students. The causes of this kind of anxiety vary from the student itself.According to the article ââ¬Å"Factors Associated with Foreign Language Anxietyâ⬠, there are variables like age, previous academic success or previous high school experience with foreign languages which may contribute to the fear of learning a fo reign language (Leigh, 2009). Nevertheless, the most common causes according to Ph. D. Renee Von Worde (2003) are the non-comprehension of the target language, speaking activities during language class and the public error correction by the teacher. Moreover, it is interesting to note that FLA occurs more commonly in mandatory language classes.This is because students who are not language inclined are ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëforcedââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ to take them (Guess, 1997). Feeling insecure about the knowledge at a certain foreign language can have drastic side effects for the foreign language student. The extreme stress, the beating heart or clammy hands are the most common ones. There may also appear problems with attainment, preservation and production in the foreign language (Von Worde, 2003). According to Professor Von Worde (2003), ââ¬Å"If anxiety impairs cognitive function, students who are anxious may learn less and also may not be able to demonstrate what they have learned.Therefo re, they may experience even more failure, which in turn escalates their anxietyâ⬠. In extreme cases, the student may even not show up to classes just to avoid speaking (Von Worde, 2003). If we could find and isolate what it is that makes us nervous, we could increase our learning abilities and have a more enjoyable learning experience (Leigh, 2009). Ideally, teachers can provide a learning environment that may reduce the fear associated with learning another language for their students (Guess, 1997; Von Worde, 2003).However, not only the teacher can help to the overcoming foreign language anxiety process. The question remains how someone can overcome their fears in language learning to develop language skills to their full potential (Leigh, 2009). There are implementable ways that beside the teachers, the tutor and the students themselves can use to reduce the anxiety and insecurity they feel. The methods and the behavior of a language teacher during language classes play a si gnificant role at the development of a student speaking confidence.There are several things that a teacher may do to decrease anxiety felt in the classroom according to Von Worde (2003): * Pick topics to teach that are relevant to the students. * Try and make the learning ââ¬Ëââ¬Ëfunââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢. * Try to create a sense of community where the students feel more comfortable in front of each other. One suggestion made was to have the students sit in a circle. * Avoid calling on people or putting them on the spot. Besides the above mentioned suggestions, a teacher can take the initiative to create a ââ¬Å"mistake happy zoneâ⬠.Teachers can avoid correcting students during certain sections of the day (e. g. for 30 minutes we will talk amongst ourselves). In this way, students do not need to fear working on perfect grammar, but rather they can just talk without feeling judged. This allows students to get a feel for fluency and letting go (Leigh, 2009). A tutor can also be very helpful to its students when it comes to overcoming those language obstacles. By judging of the state of its student, a tutor has the freedom to choose which of the above mentioned suggestions will be used during the overcoming process.Although there may not be a classroom of students to whom the tutor is teaching, the one-on-one environment allows a greater sense of intimacy and a safer atmosphere (Leigh, 2009). Alongside to the teachers and tutors effort, the most significant role still remains the one from the student itself. According to Amanda Leigh, a student should take the following recommendations in action to ââ¬Å"boost their self-confidence in speaking, reading and writing a languageâ⬠: * Be aware of Foreign Language Anxiety- Knowing that you are not alone in feeling self-conscious or afraid of speaking in a foreign language is half the battle (Von Worde, 2003).Fear of speaking in front of people is normal and so is performing in another language, even if it i s just with your friends. * Set 4 or 5 SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely) language goals for yourself in your academic term- Attach numbers to your learning so that you can see your improvement. Make measurable goals and make sure that they are realistic. Do some research to see what level you should be at by end of your term in a different country. Do not expect to be bilingual on your return to your home country. Be prepared- If you are prepared for your class or presentation then you will feel more confident in front of people. Feeling more prepared makes you feel relaxed which allows for better communication and language skills (Guess, 2007). Prepare by going over your work or presentation at least twice reading, then at least twice out loud. Get someone to help proofread. * Maintain a positive attitude- Even though it may seem hard, try and have a positive attitude. Happy people will learn faster and have a more pleasurable learning experience (Bayer, 2 004).Smile. Make native speakers aware that you are happy to be corrected. * Do some research- Find out how other students handle their anxiety. Many of their suggestions may work for you. Look online or ask around. Alter their strategies so they work for you. By adopting some of these suggestions, there is a chance that a student will personally begin to overcome their foreign language learning fears. Students may choose to adopt one of these strategies and tailor it towards their needs until they find something that works for them (Leigh, 2009).To sum up, Foreign Language Anxiety has been labeled as an issue that should not be ignored and should be handled carefully. Therefore, the overcoming FLA process includes effort that should be made from the students as well as from the teachers and tutors. This will not only help students to overcome their fear and anxiety, but will also enable language teachers and tutors to reach a higher progress at their subject. In my opinion, the mai n goal of the overcoming progress should be to create a comfortable teaching environment where a speaking accent or grammar mistake will not mean the end of the world.As Guess claims, ââ¬Å"the trick is to convince the students that discomfort is a good thing- thatââ¬â¢s when the real learning process will begin. â⬠.
