â€Å"From where Winston stood it was just possible to read, picked out on its white face in elegant lettering, the three slogans of the Party: War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength.† In the story, 1984 by George Orwell, the Party places this slogan everywhere to make sure they have the power over everyone the people. Although the Party’s ideas seem to contradict one another, their ideas do make sense in a way. If there is war between two countries and they are fighting one another, then their will be no fighting within the country. Everyone has one common enemy which makes them all on the same side. Throughout our course, we have looked at the lives of those economically disadvantaged in our society. We have talked about the causes and effects of poverty on individuals and communities and looked at multiple in depth sociological studies. I have come to the conclusion that sociological research is not relevant until it is grounded in rigorous analysis that takes into account the complex nature of social categories. Likewise, sociological analysis means nothing in a vacuum. Its value lies in the actions that people take because of the new information that they hold. In this essay, I will use the sociological concepts we have reviewed in class as a lens to reflect on my experience with developing my own sense and understanding of empathy in order to prove the importance and relevance of empathy in relation to the field of sociology. The concepts of â€Å"worthy† and â€Å"unworthy† poor came about during the English Poor Laws that were introduced in the 1500’s. The English poor laws classified poor or dependent people into three major categories and established many requirement before aid was provided. Dependent persons were categorized as: vagrant (nomadic; with no permanent home or employment), the involuntary unemployed and the helpless. In effect, the poor laws separated the poor into two classes which were the worthy and the unworthy. The worthy were classified as orphans, widows, handicapped, or the frail elderly. The problem has grown worse during the past decade since the introduction and use of smart technologies at the office which has reduc ed the requirement for physical movement among office employees as opposed to the passed. The problem is not limited to office employees and when closely examined can be seen across the entire society. Populations at Risk A major concern linked to physical inactivity is that the problem is being registered among all age groups ranging from children to teenagers, adults and the old.
